The rink goes pink for breast cancer awareness

During Thursday night's hockey game between the Peterborough Petes and the Barrie Colts, players kept their fists to themselves and instead teamed up in the fight against breast cancer.

As part of the Pink in the Rink event, the Petes donned rose-colored jerseys and fans sported an array of pink accessories including T-shirts, pants, shoes, boas, wigs and even a pink fur coat, the Peterborough Examiner reports.

The night was kicked off when 10-year-old Cassidy Kent and her 16-year-old sister Ainslee dropped the puck to start the game in front of screaming fans. The sisters lost their mother to breast cancer in 2004.

At the end of the evening, organizers praised participants for helping to raise a total of $51,614 to support breast cancer awareness and research.

Nora Endicott, fundraising coordinator for the Peterborough Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society told the news source, "I think it's so wonderful that the Petes took this fundraiser and just ran with it."

She added, "Everyone has a mother, sister, daughter, and everyone has been touched by cancer in some way."

In fact, about one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some time in their lives, according to the National Cancer Institute.ADNFCR-2795-ID-19614596-ADNFCR
