Idaho ranks lowest in breast cancer screenings

Recent reports from the Department of Health state that Idaho was listed as the lowest ranking state when it comes to women getting screened for breast cancer, and this can be many reasons, according to KIFI-TV.

This data, which states that one-third of women have not had a mammogram in two years, could be because the rural state makes it hard for women to access, plus the issue of affording it as well, the media outlet reports.

A new program titled Women's Health Check offers free mammograms and Pap tests for those who apply because they can not afford it.

"Many people when they think, especially about mammography, they think, 'Well, that's a really expensive test, and I can't afford that right now.' Well, I really encourage people to see if they qualify for that program," Maggie Mann, the Southeastern District Health Department Director, told the news source.

According to the Susan G. Komen organization, one in eight women in the U.S. will eventually be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. It is recommended that women start getting annual mammograms once they turn 40 years old to ensure that if they do have the disease, it can be caught at its earlier stages.
