Exercise can be beneficial to breast cancer survivors

A recent report by researchers from the University of Missouri found that the benefits of exercising outweigh the risks for both breast cancer survivors and those with lymphedema, which can occur in patients who had their lymph nodes removed during treatment.

The researchers discovered that exercise does not increase the chances of a survivor developing lymphedema.

"Exercise can be beneficial and not harmful for breast cancer survivors," professor Jane Armer said. "Each individual should balance the pros and cons of the activity she chooses, but keep in mind that being sedentary has risks and being active is beneficial in many ways, including possibly reducing the risk of cancer recurrence."

According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, it is recommended that once a woman turns 40 she schedules annual mammograms. In addition, those who have an extensive family history of the disease may want to ensure that these appointments are made, as family history is known to be a risk factor for the disease.
