Cymbalta approved to treat breast cancer treatment pain

A new study conducted by the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Centers has found that the drug Cymbalta may help with the relief of joint and muscle pain associated with certain breast cancer treatments, according to EMaxHealth.com.

The drug has recently been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to treat select chronic pain conditions. In breast cancer treatment, Cymbalta may relieve joint and muscle pain from aromatose inhibitors.

Aromatose Inhibitors (AI's) can help block the growth of estrogen-sensitive tumors by lowering the amount of hormone produced. The muscle and joint pain cannot be adequately relieved by general painkillers, which causes about 20 percent of women to stop using the inhibitors.

Study author N. Lynn Henry and colleagues evaluated 29 patients being treated with the AI's who were experiencing pain during treatment. When Cymbalta was added to their treatment, nearly three quarters of the women reported that their pain had decreased by at least 30 percent.

The data may be a relief to nearly half of all breast cancer patients using AI's who have had to endure the pain associated with treatment.

The American Cancer Society recommends that all women begin yearly mammograms beginning at age 40.
